About network function virtualization
Early 2011 I got asked (as probably many of you) to look into virtualization of network platforms. Working for a Tier 1 operator in Australia it wasn't hard to find a winning team to establish my first erver proof of concept. Together with VMware (still ESX 4.1), Cisco (providing the x.86 hardware /cots), EMC (providing a top of the line storage array) and Acision (providing a virtualized version of their MMSC) I was quickly astonished on the benefits operators can achieve by moving their mission critical platforms into a virtualized environment. As to be expected the NFV POC was huge success. To be able to handle the Christmas and New Year messaging peaks (and give the other carriers in Australia a bit of run for their money) we decided late 2012 to migrate MMS traffic to a virtual MMSC. Since the 5th of December 2012 the MMS capacity was available on demand! So called - right click / add CPU actually worked for mission critical systems! Never have we migrated back from the software defined MMSC to the bare metal / carrier grade MMSC!
This website should hopefully inspire and help others to move into a dynamic and agile environment. The goal of this website is to challenge the way we have been working for many years! Don't build to avoid system breaking down, instead build to expect hardware is failing!
